FAQ

This FAQ is designed to answer questions about my custom Zombuki dolls, which now include Pullip, Dal, and Blythe. If you have a question for me that isn’t answered below contact me and I’ll try me best to answer it.

What are Zombukis?

Zombukis, as a concept, are my own invention, a combination of zombie and kabuki named with the help of a friend, they are meant to represent a hybrid of many different styles. Each one is made to be truly unique with its own, strong personality; they were originally made using Jun Planning’s Pullip doll as a base, but now Zombuki Dals and Blythes are also made.

What’s a Pullip?

A Pullip is a type of fashion doll made by Jun Planning in Japan and launched in July of 2003. Pullips stand about a foot tall, are relatively poseable (moreso than a Barbie), and can move and blink their eyes. There is little to no factory work left on the doll by the time I finish customizing them. Dals are slightly shorter than Pullips and are made by the same company, they can move their eyes but cannot blink.

Where do you get your ideas from?

The designs for the first two Zombukis (Eva and Kaikai) are actually based off an America’s Next Top Model photo shoot from Cycle 3. I made Eva, named after the model who inspired her, on a lark and assumed that no one would like her or her crazy faceup. Six months later I made Kaikai and then realized that people really seemed to like them for more than just their novelty. After that I let go of the ANTM influence and now I pull my inspiration from a numerous sources, everything from Chinese Vogue to literature to billboards to nature, anything in my way, though I still love to watch ANTM ;3 Please note that, because I did not design them, the original two girls are not found on the site.

Do you accept commissions?

No, but I will allow people to order designs before their creation and see sketches, that way they can get a girl that is their style. Additionally, I am more than happy to keep preferences in mind, such as color(s), hair style, inspiration point, etc. in order to find a Zombuki that is the perfect match for you.

How do I get a Zombuki of my own?

Currently a collection of eight Zombuki girls are available exclusively though The Valley of the Dolls, and while I’m more than happy to answer any questions about them, all sales are done through VOTD so please feel free to contact them directly! Additionally, you can add your name and preferences to the 2009 Zombuki Waiting List if you are interested in getting a Zombuki from me this year. This was announced to mailing list subscribers about a week before the general public.

How do I sign up for the mailing list?

To subscribe to the Zombuki mailing list just send a blank email to news-subscribe@zombuki.com. You will be sent a confirmation email, and all you have to do is hit reply. If you have any problems signing up you can always contact me and I will add you.

What do Zombukis come with?

This is always in flux, it is best to inquire on a design-by-design basis. Generally, a Zombuki will come with coordinated clothing and a plush/felt companion.

Where did you get your wig/clothes/etc. on Zombuki X/Y/Z?

I try to post where I got things on specific photo posts in the blog, but if it doesn’t say please check my links page under “Dolls, Pullips & Blythes,” nearly everyone I work with is linked there. Due to the frequency of this question I’m not able to get back to everyone so please check the links page first.

How long does it take to make a Zombuki?

It varies depending on my schedule but they generally take 8 weeks to make, photograph, and send out. If you are getting a Zombuki on a three-month installment plan (see Waiting List) your girl will ship, at the latest, by the last day in the month of your final installment. Keep in mind that I do work and go to school full time, but I will do my best to get your girl to you as soon as I can.

What do Zombukis cost?

It varies depending on a number of factors so it’s best to ask when contacting me. They currently range from $650-$800.

Do you offer discounts?

On occasion I will offer discounts, it varies from doll to doll, please feel free to ask!

I want to change X/Y/Z in your design, is that okay?

Sorry, it’s not! I do pre-orders instead of commissions because I want to retain complete artistic control over the final Zombuki. If you’re unsure about a design or would like a slightly different one then it’s probably best to hold off until the right one for you comes along.

What’s your current schedule?

If you would like a Zombuki immediately (through early 2009) please see their page on The Valley of the Dolls where my current collection is available. Additionally, you can add you name to the Waiting List to order new girls and/or reserve one later in 2009.

I want to reserve a Zombuki but I can’t pay right away, is that okay?

To reserve a Zombuki requires a deposit – if you choose to pay with a “lump sum” it will be the entire price up front, and if you choose a “2-3 month installment” plan it will be the first month’s installment, which will range from $200-$300.

I want to start the process, how do I contact you?

Just contact me using the form or fill out the Waiting List form if you know what you’re looking for.
